Lancer Sports Network Goes Live

January 5, 2010

ORANGE, CA -- On Friday January 8, 2010, the Lancer Sports Network will broadcast the Orange Lutheran boys basketball game at Mater Dei High School. The broadcast will provide streaming video from the Murello Athletic Center at Mater Dei High School with play-by-play provided by Trenton Schlom. This online webcast can be seen on LancerSportsNetwork.com, the online home of Orange Lutheran athletics coverage. “This is a great step in the right direction,” Schlom said, “now fans will be able to enjoy the excitement of this rivalry, even if they are unable to attend the event.” Executives at the Lancer Sports Network shared that they in no way intend on taking away from the gate, but are merely “providing a resource” for out of town alumni to see the game.

It is no surprise that Lancer Sports Network chose this game to launch their first live game broadcast. Orange Luther is considered by many to be a team on the rise, and many feel that this is the first legitimate opportunity the Lancers have had to contend with perennial power Mater Dei. Currently ranked #5 in the Orange County Register poll, Orange Lutheran has received much pre-season hype, though little is known about how the Lancers will be able to compete. They have already suffered four losses, two of which to local foes (Aliso Niguel and Chino Hills), while the other two came in the Iolani Classic on Oahu this past December. One of those defeats came to Yates (TX) who is ranked as the second best team in the country by Maxpreps, the other to Gonzaga (DC) who at the time was ranked #13 in the USA Today Super 25 poll. Yates defeated the Lancers by 7 points in a game where Orange Lutheran had maintained the lead until the final three minutes of the fourth quarter, and Gonzaga won against Orange Lutheran on a buzzer-beater, holding them off by two points. With a largely out-of-county preseason schedule by both teams, Gonzaga is the Monarchs and Lancers only common opponent. Orange Lutheran fell to them by two, the Monarchs by three. Following the Gonzaga-Orange Lutheran game, the Gonzaga head coach told Orange Lutheran coach Chris Nordstrom that he believed Orange Lutheran “played [Gonzaga] tougher than Mater Dei did.”

Aside from the quality of basketball that will be seen on Friday night, Orange Lutheran and Mater Dei are league rivals who will both be eager to open the Trinity League season-opener on a positive note. Also, some intangible factors may have an effect on this game. On the football field Orange Lutheran has defeated Mater Dei six of the last seven seasons, most recently this past fall where the Lancers won on a touchdown scored with fifteen seconds remaining. While Mater Dei basketball has never fallen to Orange Lutheran. Additionally, this is a very important game to Lutheran coach Chris Nordstrom as he is a product of Gary McKnight’s coaching staff at Mater Dei.

This online webcast will be available at lancersportsnetwork.com and at the Lancer boys basketball homepage at lancerathletics.com. The scheduled start time is at 7:25 pm on Friday evening.

This game is currently the only scheduled live Lancer Sports Network webcast, however more are to be expected in the near future.
